Mindfulness is simply the skill to be in the present, not letting the mind wander...
In Japanese martial arts this skill is related to 'mushin' or no mind where no distraction occur, no loss of focus, it's being absorbed in but not attached to what one is doing.
Mindfulness practice helps strengthen the mind.
